switch layer when creating a path in 6.1.8?

I recall in older version of Virtuoso, when creating a path, the command menu (F3) had an option to switch to an adjacent layer and would plop a via down at the junction.  In 6.1.8 this is missing from the command menu. 

Noticed there is a poster on this topic about 10 years ago (!!), the suggestion was to use Wires function instead. But cannot find such a "switch to adjacent layer" in F3 pop up window either. Not sure whether I am using the right function. Create --> Wiring --> Wire. Is this correct? Any suggestion?
